InFoam Printing is the ideal technology to customise mass products like mattresses. Therefore we teamed up with a mattress manufacturer to explore new possibilities.

How can we adjust mattresses perfectly to your body shape?
Already today, people can scan their body shape and get a customised mattress. InFoam Printing would expand this idea, since it can print hardness zones in the highest resolution.
Together with our cooperation partner we produced samples and tested them for hardness and fatigue. The testing capabilities of our partner gave us great insights.
Premature End| Surprisingly, our partner's company was reorganised, which ended our partnership prematurely. Nevertheless, we learned a lot about testing methods in the mattress industry.

After the previous progress, we and Covestro were determined to pursue the topic on our own. The lab at Covestro provided us with the necessary hardness tests while my colleague and I printed samples and even full mattresses.
To summarise, we proved that InFoam Printing is able to print hardness zones in high resolution. InFoam Printing is the perfect tool for on-demand mattress customisation.
Learnings
Learnings
We learned from the industries' experts that there is barely any margin for research investments in the mattress business. This makes new technologies hard to implement.
Thanks to the cooperation project we learned about testing methods which we later applied for our own research.
