TRILUX manufactures high-quality lighting solutions. In 2013 I took part in a student project in cooperation with TRILUX. Our main focus was the use of OLED-panels as light sources for consumer products.
The “FACH” desk lamp adapts to a flexible way of working and living. The lamp can be expanded if more light is needed. This is possible due to four stackable OLED-panels which are lined up on a central rail.
The OLED-Panels are powered and supported by a cantilever. By sliding it in or out, the lamp can shrink or expand. The panels snap into place at the electric contact via magnets and then light up. The foot acts as power supply and as counterweight for the cantilever.
OLED-Panels are a fascinating light source but they turned out to be inferior to regular LED technology - both pricewise and in robustness. Therefore they never became a commercial success in lighting.
My prototype was composed of two CNC-milled halves that were glued and spray-painted afterwards. I made the cantilever and panels of bent acrylic and fixed them to the body.
